This iris has large, tough, dark green leaves. When crushed, the leaves have an unpleasent odour. Flowers are a purple colour, tinged with yellow and are produced 5 on each stem in summer. In autumn, large seed capsules split producing red, yellow or white seeds. Iris foetidissima can grow to about 90cm tall.
