Evergreen shrub or small tree. Leaves are soft, deep green, pointed and 20cm long. Flowers are clustered and open in late summer and autumn, these are long, bright purple and are tubular. Following the flowering is the production of purple, berry-like fruit. Iochroma grandiflorum grows up to 6m high and 4m wide.
